Runway Senshi Series

I had this great idea, that I wanted to do another Sailor Moon Series, and I wanted to do each of the senshi in a color they're not usually drawn in. I was originally going to do the senshi in each of their "bow" colors, and I'm really attached to the idea of drawing Makoto in pink, since it's supposedly her favorite color, and I've rarely seen her in it. (So yes, this is yet ANOTHER series inspired by Jupiter. I must feel like she's really gypped!)

At any rate, I had a hard time deciding who should wear what on my own--Usagi's been drawn in just about every color. Mercury's bow color is just another shade of blue. Do I really want to draw both Saturn and Pluto in the same "rust" color? Etc., etc. So, I asked my friends--some of the best artists and cosplayers in the business--for suggestions. This is what they came up with.

Wow. I really can't remember the last time I started and finished a drawing in the same day. Go me.
The next in my Runway Senshi series, I really liked the idea of drawing Ami in a sexy "little black dress", since it's so grown up and elegant--a side of her we unfortunately don't get to see much.
All right, so, originally I had a slightly different dress concept in mind--I really wanted the dress to look mainly black, with only a hint of blue glitter where the light hit it, much like this one red dress I own. Sadly, doing the polka dots on Usagi's dress taught me that it's really, really hard to do shapes that aren't outlined in pen with prismacolors, so the dress ended up just being all blue. I don't know why I have my heart set on only using prismacolor markers for this series, maybe it's because I'm buying so many of the darn things lately. PS, I still hate trying to color Rei's hair. IIIMPOOOSIIIBLEEE.
When Callie suggested that I draw Minako in red, because that is Sailor V's "official" color, I knew I had to take her suggestion, not only because she's an excellent Sailor Venus cosplayer, but because I had the perfect photo reference of Callie cosplaying Minako in a red evening gown!

I'm actually really pretty happy with how she came out, especially her hair color. And I've completed my main purpose in starting this series: getting to see Mako-chan in her favorite color, ultra-feminine pink.
This was a wonderful suggestion of Hime-chan's. Not only would I have listened to her anyway, since she's just about my favorite Chibiusa artist of all time, but the brown/baby blue and brown/pink combo is VERY hot this season. I'm so not used to drawing her as a child, though!
I have so much to say about this drawing. ::laughs:: Number one, I really, REALLY wanted to draw her in coral, but after I had drawn the dress and was sitting down to color it, I was trying to remember who had requested what for Setsuna, and my memory convinced me that two people had requested her in lilac. (I was wrong: one person requested her in lilac, one person requested Hotaru in lilac.) And then today when I went to check to be sure, it turned out that Callie was the one who had asked for her in lilac, and I've already taken one of Callie's suggestions already, so I felt bad. If there's one big lesson I could learn that would immensely improve my art (other than anatomy lessons, heh), it's that I need to stop being lazy and not rush--I should've rechecked the page before coloring it. That being said, this is the first time I've been really, REALLY happy with her hair AND skin shades--let's hope I remember what I used in the future! Her eyes are a little off, though.
It's funny; I sort of picked orange/coral for Haruka by default, because no one had suggested a color for her, nor orange as a color for anyone else. But when it was finished and I went to save it on my computer, it turns out I already had a file named "orangeharuka.jpg"! (You can see it on the Sailor Moon - Singles - Uranus page.) I guess I subconciously associate her with orange after all? It helped that I wanted to base Haruka's pose off of Twiggy (who she kind of reminds me of) and this is the very dress (nearly same color and everything) that Twiggy was wearing in the reference shot.

This drawing just kind of fell into place accidentally. I decided I'd draw Michiru in green, because no one had suggested a color for her, nor suggested green for anybody else, and I was interested to see how green would look with her hair. I was browsing through a few artbooks that JenyBean had, and I found a girl wearing this style dress and in this pose in one book, and a pattern similar to this one in another, so I combined the two, chose the color combination myself (which I think came out VERY well) and then was inspired to use this famous background after finishing the hem of the dress. This is my Dad's new favorite of drawings of mine--I have to admit I'm pretty proud of it too. :)
Jesus, I can't believe two and a half years have passed since I originally had the idea for this series. I guess I'm slowing down in my old age--that, and I don't have the kind of free time I did in college. At any rate, here is Hotaru in yellow. This is one of those pictures that I really wish I had scanned in before I colored it, because once I had put the dark blue trim on, I instantly regretted it. Oh, well. I kind of like the background, though. Both Louis and Skye asked me why there were steps going to nowhere, and I replied that someone must have decided to wall up a door and not bother to demolish the stairs. That sounds like something my father would do.
