Mara says:
"Tenjou Utena is one of my favorite anime characters, and one of my favorite to cosplay. The idea came from my good friend and cosplay partner, Kat, whose first costume was Himemiya Anthy's Rose Bride dress. I became her Utena, and we have done many different versions of the pair afterward."

"I really like this costume because it's convertable between her school uniform and the duellist style. The jacket is made from polysatin, which I think gives it a nice look for the duellist. The shorts are red bike shorts, which are actually several sizes too large, and I roll the waistband up a bunch of times. I had to buy a large pair because I was running out of time and couldn't find a pair that actually fit. But they still work. The epaulettes were an interesting experiment. They're basically broadcloth pillows with gold rope glued around them. They're not the best looking, and I may redo them in the future. All of the white elements (tassles, cuffs, ruffle) are made from a shiny stretchy material that I acquired somewhere earlier and worked well for this costume. The wig was bought from a small store on Pearl Street in Boulder, then cut and styled to match Utena's layers. It has since been cut even shorter to be worn as a movie Utena wig." |
