"Hallelujah! It's done!!! I was supposed to wear this at Fanime 2010, but was lame and couldn't finish it on time. Augh, where to begin? I love Utena. I love her bravery, determination and the way she struggles to break out of a world defined by gender roles. Many fans of the anime seem to dislike the movie, but I think it's brilliant. This costume marked many firsts: First time fitting a garment, first time making a jacket, first time lining a garment, first time making buttonholes, etc., etc. So it probably was rather dumb to do this version instead of the anime's first, but eh. I couldn't hold myself back any longer! As far as construction goes: The jacket was made out of stretchy twill and the shorts were made out of a cotton knit. I really like the black twill, but the white was a bit starchy for some reason." |

"I cast the jewel, its trim, the cord cap and the small triangles out of resin and then painted them. The large triangle was made out of craft foam and the epaulets were plastic circles which I cut down, painted and then trimmed with model magic. The shoes were painted. There are a few things I'd like to fix up, especially the wig. I love the color, but the wig cap is really small for some strange reason, and that makes it hard to cover all of my hairline. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out, and look forward to more Utena cosplay! Oh, the sword was made by Mike of Fantasy Props." |
